Switzerland claims vicotry during a short, but strong phase
Switzerland beats Latvia in the quarter finals 12:1. With it, we will see a repetition of last years finals on Saturday afternoon.
The qualification for the semi-finals and with it the clash against Sweden was secured by Switzerland with a short burst during the second period. Between the 29th and 40th minute, Switzerland scored seven goals for an 8:1 lead. Topscorer Mirca Anderegg scored three goals during this period and Julia Suter got four assists.
Just before that the players of Felix Coray had to endure a scary phase. Even though they were dictating the game, the result after the first period was even. Flurina Marti’s shot into the top right angle (9.) was immediately answered by Latvia’s Diana Isjomina who scored the 1:1 just three minutes later. Switzerland totally lacked efficiency. Captain Simone Berner even missed on a penalty shot (6.) and Julia Suter only hit the goal post (16.)
The expected walk-over didn’t happen
The Latvians held against Switzerland with a compact and concentrated appearance. Goalie Lauma Visnevska also played a very strong game. All the more relieving for the many specatators was the short burst of energy Switzerland had during the second period. Right before the burst Madara Rudzie also hit iron after playing around Heidi Jud.
During the last period, which Switzerland played with three instead of two pairs of defenders Switzerland did not have the easy game they expected. Switzerland nevertheless controlled the game and got the reassurance, that they are in great shape for their fight for a medal if they play like they did during the second period. Latvia on the other hand will be playing against Norway this Saturday morning in a placement match to decide who will claim places five through eight.
